Pacific Arts Movement

Overview

Pacific Arts Movement (Pac Arts) is one of the largest media arts organizations in North America that focuses on Asian and Asian American cinema. Their flagship event is the San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF), a festival dedicated to highlighting the work of Asian Pacific Islander American filmmakers. As a graphic design intern for Pac Arts, I created a variety of marketing collateral for two events: Chew the Scene (SDAFF's launch party) and SDAFF.

Brand guidelines

Every year, SDAFF develops a unique identity based on an illustration. For the 2022 Festival, SDAFF's creative team centered their branding guidelines around a piece of artwork created by illustrator Art Twink. I was responsible for transforming the event branding into a range of digital and print materials that would be employed in Pac Art's marketing campaigns and events. This experience taught me how to adhere to brand guidelines in order to guarantee the accurate representation of SDAFF's brand style and personality in my designs.

Tools

I utilized Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create my designs. The graphic design director, Jannah Maling, delegated tasks using Airtable, a collaborative tool. Through Airtable, I received comprehensive design briefs, including deadlines, formats, content details, and categories. I also used Airtable to submit my work and receive feedback. It was fascinating to discover how an organization such as Pac Arts effectively maintains organization and task management for large events like Chew the Scene and SDAFF. I gained insights into design formatting and the differences between creating designs for print and digital applications.

Reflection

Designing for Pac Arts allowed me to learn a lot about brand identity for events and the process of creating digital and print materials. It was very rewarding to see my work printed out and utilized at these big events. Chew the Scene had over 500 attendees and the San Diego Asian Film Festival had over 15,000 attendees! Also, SDAFF is officially the 2022 Best Film Festival in San Diego, which is pretty cool. I enjoyed the opportunity to become involved in the Asian arts and culture scene in San Diego.
