DormIt Customer

Overview

DormIt is a student-run delivery service at UCSD that aims to deliver convenience items to students in under 10 minutes. DormIt Customer is a mobile app that allows users to order groceries, restaurant items, and school supplies to any part of the UCSD campus. My UI/UX Design internship at DormIt began with redesigning the customer app.

Process

The existing customer app design violates basic design principles. My teammate and I reimagined DormIt’s customer facing app with a focus on simplistic order placement and modern visual design.

Ideation

I did a quick competitive analysis, looking at similar companies (Duffl) as well as more established ones (Doordash). I was specifically looking at the home page as it required a major redesign.

As we were limited on time, we drew from our sketches or existing wireframes to create high fidelity wireframes, iterating based on feedback.

I was primarily in charge of redesigning Home, Order Details, Order History, and Profile.

User personas

Design objectives

  • Design a cohesive and visually appealing interface for a wide range of users
  • Provide a seamless and linear ordering experience
  • Create high product visibility

Brand personality

Since we wanted to refresh DormIt’s brand by making it youthful and energetic, I opted to introduce a pastel color palette, complemented by appetizing food illustrations (from a Figma plugin) to create mouthwatering appeal.

With a clear understanding of the app's features and failures, our design objectives, and the brand personality we wanted to communicate (clean, bright, playful), we went to work.

Reflection

Designing for DormIt Customer app was my first design experience working with real stakeholders, with the chance to see my designs come to life and be in the hands of users.

In the future, I will pay more attention to the early-stage research, as I underestimated the importance of analyzing and researching existing apps.

Working in a remote format taught me many things. I had to make sure to stick to the assigned deadlines, realizing that missing them would impact the entire development. I became more comfortable with giving and receiving feedback. I also learned how to effectively communicate my design decisions, growing creative confidence.
